Cypriot dream-pop/rock artist Freedom Candlemaker (aka Lefteris Moumtzis) shares new song and video “Gold”
“Gold” is an exploration into self-worth. The song ponders on different roles in relationships, either between people, with oneself, or with nature. The music reflects both the haunting dread and the soothing tranquility that the processes of self-reflection and self-acceptance carry. Incorporating a twisted bossa nova rhythm and featuring a heavily-effected classical guitar as its main instrument, the lyrics are formatted in an insistent series of questions and culminate into the song’s eerie and perplexedly mellow dreaminess. The track was recorded, mixed and mastered at Studio eleven63 in Nicosia, Cyprus by Andreas Trachonitis, and is part of a series of upcoming singles and videos to be released by the artist.
“I wanted to invoke a sense that we are not alone in our challenges; that we are all in this together and everyone is equally important, loved, as well as hurt and confused. It’s meant to be a soothing song; a reminder to be open to being loved”, explains Freedom Candlemaker.
The accompanying video, premiering on 8 April via the Louvana Records YouTube channel, is directed by Andreas Dimitriou of White Leaf Pictures and shows Freedom Candlemaker in a phantasmagoria of shimmery scenes of the artist’s quest for answers. With the singer-songwriter clothed in white against a white background, the video depicts symbols of purity, simplicity and spirituality anchoring oneself through trial and error.
The song brings together common themes in Moumtzis’ music: spirituality, empathy and achieving peace with one’s inner being via constant change and reinvention - an overarching subject in his 2019 album “Beaming Light”. The track also harks to the mellow nu-folk sounds that characterised his 2016 album “Now Happiness” (released as Lefteris Moumtzis).
Prior to the release of “Gold”, Freedom Candlemaker made his debut in 2019 with the dream pop and psychedelic rock-infused album ‘Beaming Light’, courtesy of Greek label, Inner Ear Records. This was his first release under the alias Freedom Candlemaker - a direct translation of the artist’s name, Lefteris Moumtzis into English. Previously Moumtzis had released albums as Lefteris Moumtzis, J.Kriste Master of Disguise and is a core member of the band Trio Tekke, making Moumtzis one of the most celebrated musicians of Cyprus.
“The recording process for “Gold” was much simpler than the “Beaming Light” sessions. I liked the idea of creating a fluid tie between “Now Happiness” and “Beaming Light” and it’s something that poured out of me very naturally. I have more songs coming out that are somewhere between those two albums now - but also pushing through into new grounds in search of the sound for the next release I am aiming to put out next year.”
