Lofou, Lemesos / Saturday, 17 September 2011

Independent production teams Louvana from Lefkosia and Ypogeia Skini from Lemesos are organising a very special festival this September. The festival, which was organised for mid-July and was postponed due to the July 11th incident, it's going to take place at the old mountain village of Lofou, in the Lemesos district.

Artists / Program
There will be 3 live groups performing at the festival, 2 from Greece and 1 from
Cyprus.

Thanasis Papakonstantinou, 9:30p.m.
Thanasis has written and produced some of the best music, Greek discography has to offer in the last 20 years. He is a magnificent songwriter and lyricist whose songs have been performed by such important singers as Socratis Malamas, Melina Kana, Giannis Aggelakas and the late Nikos Papazoglou. His latest album ‘O Elahistos Eaftos’ (Inner Ear 2011), which is promoting on this tour is doing brilliantlys. He visited Cyprus back in March (another promotion of Louvana), played four sold out shows, had a great time and now he is back with a much larger (10 piece) group for more. Their live appearances are always unforgettable. Liveliness, dancing and improvisation are some of the things you should expect.

Mode Plagal, 7:30p.m.
Many still are reminiscing the amazing time they had at Mode Plagal’s last show in Cyprus in 2008. They also have released a new album last year called Stin Koilia tou Kitous (Lyra 2010). In the past, they have been named one of the best ethnic groups in Europe. But they are not just that. Mode Plagal have created their own music idiom. An idiom with references to traditional music and lyrics, byzantine modes, funk rhythms and endless other musical elements that don’t belong to a certain style. We’ve seen them several times in Cyprus especially around the turning of the century. These days they are all busy performing with various other projects like Malamas, Himerini Kolymvites, Martha Frintzila, Chainides e.t.c. At Lofou they will be united and they will fill the space with their unique groovy sounds.

J.Kriste, Master of Disguise Saturday 6:30p.m.
Lefteris Moumtzis’ band has played live extensively last season, mainly in Lefkosia in places like Antonaki’s Music Hall and The Weaving Mill, gaining a substantial fan base. Their critically acclaimed album ‘Girls, Ghosts and Gods’ (Puzzlemusik 2009) is a current favorite for local fans of this scene. It has been chosen as one of the best of the year by Greek magazines and webzines in 2009. Folk – rock – psychedelic compositions that take you places, with various alternations are some of the ingredients of the band’s sound. They will perform songs from the album and new numbers from their forthcoming album, expected for release towards the end of the year.

The program will be enriched by the sounds of DJ Tony Cusack who is going to spin selections from his large vinyl selection.

Once in a lifetime, you’ll experience a pandemic. Once in a blue moon, you’ll have a chance to escape to a secluded island. Once on a red Thursday, as the local saying in Cyprus goes, you’ll be in a situation with a group of complete strangers, fully immersed in the sparks of creation flying forth. On A Red Thursday (9 March) is the product of just such a gathering of musicians from a multitude of backgrounds, journeys, skills and preferences. Their first single, ‘ Until We Meet Again’ , performed by Eurotoire team members Panayi and Jolien marks the beginning of sharing their experiences of stepping outside their comfort zones with the world. Following this first offering is alternative RnB number ‘ So Lonely ’ (3 February) performed by Maris Pihlap. ‘ Figures ’ (25 February) is the final single before the album’s release and sees Raveloe and Tamara van Esch punk out in a commentary on obstacles womxn face.

DOUBLE LP,  DIGITAL ALBUM - found.ee/OnARedThursday

In a songwriting programme piloted by Cypriot label, Louvana Records called Eurotoire, songwriters, producers, and session musicians from ten countries were invited to gather in Cyprus to test their limits, trust strangers, and allow their artistry to merge. Their initial week-long meeting began on a Thursday in June at Studio eleven63 in the island’s capital of Nicosia and blossomed into fifteen demos. After another two writing and recording sessions in July and September, the tracks bloomed into the Eurotoire team members’ fully-fledged album. Now they’re using On A Red Thursday to spread the word about the power of surrendering to creative instinct and collaborating with the unknown. On 13 February, the Louvana Records YouTube channel premiered a short documentary created by all eighteen artists with a single camera shared between them. Clips shot by the artists were edited together by videographer Antonis Pouliasis to depict their journey from complete strangers to collaborators as they untie forces to create an album together.
